I fell in love with teaching during my graduate studies at the University of Kansas. After a couple years as a university professor in south Florida, I knew I wanted to shift my career to focus more on teaching, in an environment conducive to forming strong relationships among teachers and students. Community is important to me in the classroom and in my personal life, and I was also ready to be closer to my family in Mooresville and Concord. I could not be happier to be part of the PLP community! Outside of school, I enjoy being, well, OUTSIDE! I'm an avid runner, lifelong equestrian, and animal lover, with a particular soft spot for senior pups and teeny kittens.

I believe the learning process is different for each individual and everything influences each of us. You are the sum of all that you have ever experienced. Therefore it is vital to make sure that the experiences I give students are positive. I make it a point to find the good in each child, something I love about each of them. Children respond and thrive when they know that not only are you there to teach them but that you also care about them. As a parent and an educator, I am constantly aware that my words and actions matter. It is important to me to love and respect my students in the same way that I hope my own children are being treated by their teachers. I am willing to show my personality to my students, have passion for my subject, and reflect on my practice to make improvements when needed. Excitement for learning and kindness for others are both contagious.

I love working with the kids on and off the athletic fields as I love watching our kids work together to help a group be successful. Athletics can create leaders and great school pride and spirit and allow our kids to learn things such as Respect, Responsibility and Commitment. My family loves sports but when we get away, we love traveling and spending time with family.

I teach because developing engaged citizens is directly related to maintaining the freedoms we have inherited. The courses I teach allow me to play a meaningful role in that endeavor.

I am a Pine Lake Preparatory alumni and I am honored to return as a teacher. I am thankful to be able to give back to the school that gave me so much. I believe each student has their own special ability and I work every day to help my students' reach their full potential. My goal is to foster relationships with students and promote growth not only academically, but in character as well.
Michelle Huffstetler
As a teacher I seek to create a productive, safe, and nurturing environment for my students. By creating an atmosphere of respect and acceptance, each child can reach their full potential. I want children to love school and learning! I also strive to help students become responsible and caring individuals. I hope to instill the tools needed to be the best individuals they can be. I want students to leave my classroom in many ways better than when they entered. I want students to believe in themselves and know that with dedication and hard work they can be anything they wish to be, go anywhere they want to go and make the world a much better place! “Every child deserves a champion: an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists they become the best they possibly can be.” Rita Pierson, Educator

I truly believe that a quality and enriching education is more important now than ever. Technology provides teachers with tools and capabilities that have never existed before, but the core of any great education is great teachers. I really am a geek at heart. I enjoy hiking and outdoor activities with my family as well as photography, gaming, programming, and technology current events.
Anthony Irwin
My educational philosophy is that students learn best when they are actively engaged in science through activities such as reading, discussing, experimenting, and solving problems. My role is to create more experiences in which my students construct their own understanding of science and how our universe works.
Jennifer Ivey
I grew up just outside of Cleveland, Ohio and moved to North Carolina in 2008. This is currently my 11th year teaching Health and PE here at Pine Lake and I also coached volleyball for 9 of those years. My husband Joe and I have two beautiful girls; Lily (3) and Isla (5 mo.). I am still a huge fan of my Browns, Buckeyes, Cavs, and Indians. My family and I enjoy spending any time we can (mostly summers) in the 1000 Islands region of the St. Lawrence River in northern New York. We enjoy boating, swimming, hiking, exploring the islands, fishing, and taking day trips to Canada.

Catawba College- Masters in Education
Catawba College-Reading Specialist Certification K-12
I am originally from Salisbury, North Carolina and I moved to Huntersville in 2019. I enjoy boating, traveling and spending time at the beach. I really like to spend my time getting lost in a good book. My love of reading and learning led me into the field of education. I've taught for twenty-five years at the elementary and middle school levels. Building strong relationships with my students and providing a learning environment that encourages inquiry are the cornerstones of my teaching philosophy. "It is not enough to simply teach children to read; we have to give them something worth reading. Something that will stretch their imaginations—something that will help them make sense of their own lives and encourage them to reach out toward people whose lives are quite different from their own." —Katherine Patterson

Lori Kessler
M.A. Secondary Education- Chemistry- Lewis University, Romeoville, IL
Certified Learning Behavior Specialist
I have recently relocated to Mooresville with my husband, 2 teenage sons, and the family dog we rescued, Tater. I am excited to get to meet the students and families of the Pine Lake Prep community. Earlier in my career, I taught Chemistry at a community college for 9 years while working as an analytical scientist in the personal care and packaging industries. After going into the education field full time I taught many science classes and the last 5 years which have been exclusively focused on AP Chemistry and Honors Chemistry. As a teacher, I will work to ensure the classroom will be a safe space in which to develop our abilities. We will actively exchange ideas while developing our critical thinking skills. In the pursuit of growth, we will overcome challenges, develop resilience, and deal with setbacks and failures productively achieving mastery through practice.
