Spanish and Spanish Immersion
Whether Pine Lake Prep students are in a Spanish Immersion or traditional class setting, Spanish language acquisition is emphasized K-12.
Spanish Immersion at PLP
Pine Lake Preparatory implements a 50/50 dual language model from Kindergarten through 5th grade, with two dual language classrooms at each grade level. In this model, students spend half of their instructional time learning in English and the other half in Spanish. The Spanish portion is led by fully bilingual teachers, native Spanish speakers, who not only teach academic content, but also embed cultural understanding into daily instruction.
The program extends into Middle School, where dual language students continue developing their skills through two dedicated courses taught in Spanish: Conexiones, which emphasizes cross-curricular and global connections, and Spanish Language Arts, which builds literacy and academic language. These courses are designed to deepen students’ bilingualism and biliteracy while supporting continued academic achievement.
Collaboration between English and Spanish teachers is key to the program’s success. Teachers plan together to align standards, and integrate strategies that promote language transfer and reinforce content across both languages. A consistent focus across grade levels is creating opportunities for meaningful student interaction, with an emphasis on promoting oral language development as a foundation for reading, writing, and thinking in both languages.
