Technology

The student technology program at Pine Lake Prep is a fundamental part of our educational experience. We strive to expand technology usage and innovative learning opportunities by equipping students with quality devices, software, and support. We believe that MacBooks/iPads and applications they support help graduate students who are college and career ready.

All students in grades K-5 are assigned an iPad for use at school and home.  A case is provided with all iPads and must remain on the iPad at all times.  Students K-2nd grade students will leave their iPads at school.

Students in grades 6-12 are assigned a 13″ MacBook Air for home and school use.  Hard cases must be purchased by students/families (case for model A1932).  Keyboard covers cannot be used. An example of a case can be found here.

In general, we do not collect MacBooks for the summer.  This allows students to continue to use their device over the summer months.  Students in 5th, and 12th grade will turn in their devices at the end of the year.  We may on occassion collect devices for maintenance or refresh.

Any issues with a device must be handled by PLP Technology.  Please do not ever take a student device to Apple or a 3rd party repair company.

Tech Fees

While Pine Lake has invested largely in the program to date, there is also a Technology Usage Fee. The Usage Fee for both MacBooks and iPads is $50, with a supplemental insurance charge of $100 per MacBook, and $25 per iPad. The Usage Fee covers the use of the device, support, and software.

Insurance covers any damages to the student device less a 20% deductible. The deductible will increase, maxing out at 40%, for any recurring damage within the same school year.  For example, repairing a broken MacBook screen costs $399.  The amount charged to families for a broken MacBook screen with insurance is $84 (20% of the repair plus a My Payments Plus service fee).

Without insurance, families are responsible for 100% of repair/replacement fees when damage occurs. A replacement MacBook is $895 + tax, and a replacement iPad is $300 + tax if the case is intact, $340 + tax if not (or the entire case and iPad are lost). The total of the fee with the insurance is:

$150 for students in grades 6 – 12 for an Apple MacBook Air

$75 for students in grades K – 5 for an Apple iPad

Payments can be made in Pine Lake’s Student Accounting Platform – My Payments Plus (or “MPP”).

The link to MPP is https://www.mypaymentsplus.com. If you have any questions or issues regarding My Payments Plus, please contact Juli Gardner at Juli.Gardner@pinelakeprep.org or 704-237-5314.

Please note, that while we provide cases for iPads, students are responsible for purchasing a hard shell case for MacBooks and keeping it in good working order.  There are many to choose from on Amazon or other online vendors. Be sure you get a case for a 13″ MacBook Air, model A1932. (Not an 11″ MacBook Air, or a MacBook, or MacBook Pro case).  Keyboard covers may not be used as they cause screen damage over time.
